Michigan had never before faced a crucial problem as this. According to the latest Kid Counts report, child poverty has reached epidemic proportions, with the figure rising to an alarming 29%.

In the year 2000, the count was 14 percent, which rose to 18 percent in 2004, and the latest is 29%, a leap of nearly 11 percent.

Kid Counts, the non-profit group that compiled a report on the issue, says that with the increase in child poverty, the number of children in every family is increasing as well with no breads owners in the family.

This is not only a dangerous situation but also one that points to the other side of the story. With unemployed parents failing in supporting the child, most of these children will remain illiterate, as their parents cannot afford the school fees.
