A study conducted by jointly by the Ministry of Solidarity and UNICEF in 2001 has revealed the two basic factors pushing Algerian children onto the streets- Firstly, the socio- economic and cultural factors and secondly the security situation. The second factor was related to the violence faced by the children within the family. It was estimated that around 60 percent children complained of domestic violence.



Lack of commitment on the part of local authorities and no organization dealing particularly with the plight of the children, are adding more to the problem.
