Child Marriages in South Asia, India

Despite a host of legal provisions, child marriage is still in vogue in many parts of South Asia.

This illegal practice results in heath problems, early pregnancy, infant mortality etc.

The practice is mainly prevalent in the poor strata of the society who often force children as young as five years to marry - at times for some extra money in dowry. For the poor, a kid is cash.

The UN reports that in Afghanistan, nearly half of the marriages involve girls who are barely 16 years old.

In South Asia, 1,000 Child Marriages take place every single year. That is on the lower side.

In order to do away with this aged old practice education, employment for girls is the only solution that needs to be strategically worked upon.
