It could hardly have been more shocking or thought provoking. Rape is always a ghastly and cowardly act committed by one who unleashes out the savage instincts inside him and although rape cases are far from uncommon, when underage kids start raping their peers, things do take an uglier turn. Just as it has done in the small Georgian town of Acworth.

3 boys, one only 8 years of age and the other two 9 each, have shoved the small and otherwise peaceful community in Acworth into a pool of fear and apprehension. They have been accused of raping an 11-year old girl with whom they were paying with on Thursday by threatening her with a rock. The gruesome incident is said to have occurred in an wooded area behind the worinmg class complex where the children live.

The law is up a stump over the matter. The boys’ age implies that they cannot stand a full trial for their alleged cruel deed but at the same time, the law cannot ignore the plight of the 11-year old girl. To the disdain of the larger public, the media has access to the courtroom ongoings and all the people involved in the matter, including the parents, have been told to keep mum.

Yet it would be foolishness to sideline the burning issue and a crime to consider this matter as isolated and sporadic. The US society has long been troubled by child abuse and criminal activities pertaining to underage kids but this is a rare case when children commit rape on their own peers. In recent years, there has been a dramatic upsurge in shooting sprees in schools across the US when frustrated school kids go on shooting indiscriminately before killing themselves.
The US society needs to dig deep into the matter and come up with the solution. Everyone can see that there’s something hugely wrong in the way that children are brought up in the US and it’s high time that the parents, teachers and administrators start paying more attention to the matter at hand.
