Sexual abuse of children among the Aborigines of Australia is on the rise. Lack of education and influence of alcohols and drugs are the major reasons behind such heinous crime, an investigation reveals.

An inquiry conducted into the acquisition of child sex abuse among the Aborigines of northern Australia, by the Pat Anderson committee has come up with startling reports. The indigenous community dominated Northern Territory of Australia is one of the most backward regions of the continent. Smuggling, illegal animal trade, drug and human trafficking are the few of many blames thrust upon the region.

The investigation report highlighting sexual exploitation of under aged children particularly girls, by people within the Aboriginal communities and from outside, says that lives are being destroyed at tender age itself falling prey to rivers of grog. The inquiry was ordered for in August last year by Northern Territory Chief Minister Clare Martin after a documentary aired by the ABC showed cases of child abuse in the central Australian community of Mutitjulu.

The investigation blaming lack of education and alcoholism among the tribes outlines evidences of sex trades and juvenile prostitution. It recommends for a major shift in education system, greater action from government agencies and the stringent pornography laws.

The Northern Territory and the communities living there in suffer from acute poverty and underdevelopment. The indigenous community is being neglected by the so-called civilized Government of Australia, virtually lives in ghettos far away from the cities and towns. Even the opposition leaders continuously blame the government for non-imposition of tougher penalties and stricter bail conditions for crimes against the Aborigines. The continuous change of the head of the investigation committee is also an indication of government’s non-serious attitude.

The Aborigines of Australia are one of the most backward tribes in the world. After Cathy Freeman, an Aborigine won sprint gold medal at the Sydney Olympics, the community came to the limelight. Many scholars and NGOs are working to save the dwindling population and help them survive their primitive living. But the callous approach o Australian Government is certainly a cause of concern.
