The issue of domestic violence is a largely neglected subject worldwide as it is regarded a private family affair rather than a social one. Although in every country, domestic violence is considered a crime, things get hardly noticed because of the silence on the part of victims due to social obligations.

But, the irony of the fact is that domestic violence leads to a huge negative impact on the society. Domestic violence is the result of a physical, mental or sexual abuse or intimidation by any family member against another. In almost all the cases, we find children getting effected by serious differences among their parents.

Violence can take many forms, it can be mental and physical. When there are some serious differences among a couple, young children blonging to that couple face inexplicable mental trauma resulting from the lack of peace in the household. Children, afterall, strive for the loving company of both mother and father.

The mental trauma gets converted into some traumatic disorders for the effected children in the event of a divorce, particularly when court battle ensues for the legal possession of child/children. There are huge negative ramifications on the personality of a young boy/girl if he/she happens to be a victim of regular physical domestic violence.

Domestic violence victims are regularly exposed to threats, violence, intimidation, physical, emotional and mental abuse which result in unusual personality characteristics such as fear, nightmares, social withdrawal, pessimism, anxiety, etc.

Psychologists, NGOs and government have provided various ways to tackle domestic violence. There are local domestic violence prevention associations in almost all communities across the world which provide the victims counselling programmes, legal services, shelter, safety planning, etc.

Every individual should take the responsibility to get involved in domestic violence cases and support the victims. Sometimes any outside involvement make abusers realize that their behaviors are having a bitter effect on the family and particularly to the children. Moreover, victims should be encouraged and supported to escape the violence.
