That rainy morning, I was waiting at the bus stop to board a bus. Continuous showers had made roads rather muddy and untidy. Passing cars drove through the stagnant waters, splashing them on the people standing near by. Just when my bus was about to arrive, something soft held my legs. It was a kid, probably 7 or 8-years-old. His legs were severely bent and he could not stand. I realized that he was disabled.
Every society in the world has disabled members. While treatment meted out to these souls has traditionally been harsh, the world has now risen to understand their sorry state and accept them as an integral part of popular life. Considering that some part of the body does not function normally, it is a real challenge to live without it. Disabled children will need good support to start a life, satisfied and confident without worrying about their problem.
Often children with physical, mental or communicative disabilities are abandoned on roads and hospitals and made orphans. So then, what next in the life of such children? It is important to understand that these children are the ‘last of the minorities‘ and in most cases neglected. In such a scenario, the foremost question is how to bring these kids to some threshold from where they can lead a life confident, happy and with dignity?

Parents Support Essential
Training children with disabilities needs special focus. Since they cannot be taught as normal children can, there should be special means to help them learn. Some basic techniques include paired learning, interactions with other children who are similarly disabled, parent participation and soft games.
In paired learning, two children work as a team to learn. Interactions with other similarly disabled persons help these kids build their self-confidence. Parent participation is very essential and it is often a test of patience. Soft games would help in refreshing their minds and adapting to competitive environment, there by building a sporting spirit.

World Games for the disabled
The world has changed its attitude towards the disabled. However, there are still millions of disabled children fighting the battle of life hard. Let us hope that schools of special learning will work in much better ways to bring these kids to the common threshold.
