A fast moving fire which engulfed the Sarajevo orphanage on Sunday swallowed up five babies, leaving behind an injured nurse, (who tried to rescue the babies) and nineteen other infants.
Charred cradles, baby beds and teddy bears were scattered around the three gutted rooms, and smoke continued to drift through corridors hours after the fire.
Sarajevo police asserted that the two babies were kept in the intensive care unit.
The orphanage was evacuated and its officials declined to comment; however, some children were expected to return later to wings untouched by the fire.
Firefighters said they extinguished the blaze in 10 minutes and rescued 23 children in the three most-damaged rooms, but couldn’t save the others because of the speed at which flames raced through the building.
Authorities do not know what caused the fire, and have stated to begun an investigation into the cause of it.
