Parents are the guilty party behind rampant physical and sexual abuse in Guyanese homes, an assertion put forward by the government officials.
A survey carried out by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) gave startling evidence, according to which, girls were twice more likely to be raped at home than boys, with 10 per cent girls and five per cent boys being sexually abused. And that fathers and stepfathers are responsible for the sexual violence, while mothers and other females physically exploit the children.
The study articulated that alcoholism, financial pressure and infidelity on the part of a parent are responsible for the growing menace. This attitude by the parents has forced their children to take refuge on streets, where most of them would soon qualify to become a ‘professional’ rogue.
Adults who were suppose to be their guardians or protectors are taking in the role of evil doers, is a matter of shame on their part. Authorities must do a thorough examination of the whole affair.
