According to the Iraqi security sources, in order to attack ‘assumed’ insurgents, a US helicopter slaughtered a number of children at a primary school in Diyala province north-east of Baghdad.
Representative for the US military have postulated that there had been helicopter activity in the area but he was not able to confirm any other details.
One police officer asserted that the helicopter was shot at from the ground during the morning. The school was said to have been hit when the aircraft returned fire.
The incident has killed some six children and six others were found to be injured, however, the figures have not been independently confirmed.
A spokesman for the US forces in Iraq, Lt-Col Chris Garver, said the US tried to do everything possible to avoid civilian casualties, which was why it was taking the reports seriously and conducting an investigation.
The past few weeks have witnessed an intensification of violence in the region.
On Sunday, a convoy of US armoured vehicles was hit by a bomb which killed six soldiers and a Russian journalist who was traveling with them.
Now, the question is, were there really ‘insurgents’ or was this just an American revenge killing?
