According to the NIDA- supported research conducted by the Medical College off Virgina Common Wealth University in Richmond, has found that women who were sexually abused in their childhood are at increased risk for drug abuse as adults.
Dr. Kenneth Kendler along with his colleagues assessed, the information gathered from the 1,411 adult twins, between three levels of childhood sexual abuse- nongenital, genital and intercourse and six adult disorders - major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, bulimia nervosa, alcohol dependence and drug dependence. He found that the women who in their childhood have been the victim of sexual abuse are three times more likely than the unabused girls reported drug dependence as adult.
