train_557Two teenagers, 16 and 13 wanted to have ‘the greatest joy ride of the life’ and so, stole a 125-tonne locomotive and rode for 12 miles!

Eric Burks, 16, of Lawrence County, and Zachary Walden, 13, of Scioto County (of Ohio), have now been charged with stealing a Hocking Valley Scenic Railway locomotive and riding it up the tracks to Logan, where they stopped and surrendered to police.

The older boy’s earlier experience in rail yards with members of his family, helped him in this ride.

The youths are charged with breaking into the locomotive house of the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway, firing up the engine and taking off early morning at about 1:15 a.m.

A Nelsonville police officer noticed the locomotive leaving town and radioed the Hocking County sheriff’s office. A deputy followed the train until it stopped near Rts. 33 and 328.

They were charged with delinquency counts of grand theft, breaking and entering and escape. A judge ordered them returned to the custody of their home counties.

Indeed a memorable ride for those boys.
